I was in need of some home organization hacks for busy mums as I am super busy! All the time! And I can’t seem to get off this hamster wheel. I have been browsing for decluttering tips, time-saving hacks and tips for organizing small spaces so I can’t be the only one trying to improve my home as a mum. I have put together tips I have found to share for home organization for mums.
This post is all about 10 Quick Home Organization Hacks for Busy Mums.
Time-Saving Hacks
Start Small: Tackle One Drawer at a Time
This is harder than you think! Especially when being distracted every two minutes. But, I have found this seems to be the only way to get started and actually make some progress. Avoid overwhelm by breaking tasks down into bite-sized chunks in order to progress forward in some form of way.
Start with the typical keep, toss and donate piles. Just don’t let your donate pile get too big before actually donating! I find its too hard then to take the stuff when I am juggling the kids too.
#Update: I have now bought a garden trunk to put all the things in I am decluttering to keep them in one place. This will be to sell on VINTED or to take to a car boot sale.
Create a Daily Cleaning Schedule That Works for You
- Morning, afternoon, and evening routines.
- Use apps or printable charts to stay on track.
What’s My Routine:
Mornings:
- Put clean dishes away
- Add dirty dishes to dishwasher
- Put a load of washing on
- Prep for a slow cooker dinner (if possible)
Afternoons:
- Tidy up
- Empty dishwasher
- Wipe services
- Pick a room to clean
Evenings:
- Load dishwasher as I prepare food
- Check clothes are dry
- Take clothing upstairs ready to be put away the next day.
Declutter as you clean! I have now decluttered quite a lot from my house yet I still feel significantly overwhelmed. I’ve learnt it’s an ongoing process and to just keep going!
Declutter Kid Zones in 15 Minutes
- Rotating toys for less clutter and more fun. The kids will never be bored again! Only issue with this is that you need to actually rotate the toys, another task for mummy if you have the time!
- Involve your kids in the cleanup process with a fun game.
- Remove toys which aren’t played with and give to charity, sell on VINTED, dispose of or sell at a car boot sale.
i personally try to sell first so I can put the money back into my kids clothes in the next size up.
Repurpose Everyday Items for Storage
- Using mason jars for art supplies or pantry staples, i.e from pickled vegetables.
- Transform shoe boxes into drawer organizers.
The Power of a “Command Center”
- Set up a central area for wall calendars, to-do lists, and meal plans – I prefer the Skylight calendar its amazing!
- Keep keys, school notes, and mail in one accessible spot.
- Keep coats, daily bags and shoes in one tidy place like the porch. Take everything off and store as you enter the house and when you leave put everything on as you leave.
BONUS TIPS:
Batch Cooking
Batch cooking the day BEFORE you do your food shopping! Yes, that’s right! Do a session of shelf cooking the day before you buy more food. This uses up food in your cupboards and also means you end up not buying as much at the shops.
Now you can meal plan alongside this but I would suggest doing this after batch cooking. Why? It’s good to have freedom in the kitchen to throw anything in the pan and use things up.

Grab all the fresh vegetables you have left and any meat that needs using up and a few large pans. Then throw in a few ingredients onto the pans and see what you can create. This is what I did above, I ended up with a burrito bowl for dinner and meatballs vegetable sauce for tomorrow.
Once completed, let them cool and you can always freeze any leftover portions for another day.
AND THEN, go shopping for anything you need in the up and coming week.
Meal Planning
After your shelf cooking session or before whichever you feel suitable for you it’s a good idea to meal plan to keep on top of using food up and reducing waste and supermarket costs.
